SHEEP’S MILK VODKA
THE PROCESS OF DISTILLING SHEEP’S MILK VODKA
We’re proud to have produced a rare and unique spirit made using an otherwise byproduct from our flock of sheep. We have developed the UK’s first sheep’s milk vodka to give you a little taste of what Sheaf House Farm has to offer in its rarest form. The reason why our sheep’s milk vodka is so rare is because we have taken our Valais Blacknose sheep, and with selective breeding created Black Lion sheep. This breed of sheep then forms part of the milking flock which produces a byproduct for us to use and turn into vodka!
Creating this byproduct is a lengthy process and one which starts with the birth of a lamb. This journey then takes 2 years of work on the farm to nurture and grow our flock, before they are fully-fledged and ready for milking. It is only then that the byproduct is produced.
We’ve all heard of Sheep’s milk but what happens to the whey? Whey is seen as a waste product within the industry and is often discarded. With this in mind, we’ve been working hard to create the perfect vodka recipe using whey as the key element within our distilling process.
The process of producing our Black Lion Vodka is extremely technical and has to be distilled through triple distillation and filtration to create a crisp and flavourful vodka. With most vodkas being made from grains, potatoes or grapes, we saw a gap in the market and an opportunity to put this technical distilling process and our rare breed of sheep firmly on the map. With the process still being so rare, we’re of course holding the secrets close to our chest but we can reveal that it can be done and sheep’s whey no longer needs to be seen as a byproduct.
We’re passionate about sustainability and believe this is the key to our success and survival. So long as the sheep are milked we will always produce a byproduct. Throughout British Farming, there have always been waste products and we wanted to develop new ways to transform the waste product into something niche and innovative.
Our unique distilling process has allowed us to create a full-bodied and flavourful vodka. With warming tasting notes and a subtlety of Edelweiss, our crisp, clean and silky smooth vodka is something we’re incredibly proud of.
